I really like how you explain “bending”. I never really understood what note I was supposed to end up on. Thank You.
March 22, 2020 @ 4:44 pm
You’re welcome and glad it helped! It’s certainly a critical part of bending properly, but easily overlooked

The lick is a good one, BUT: your notation is wrong. Example 3 is NOT a series of triplets. Yes, it’s a 3-note pattern (G-A-C), but they’re still 16th notes. You have written it as repeating four times, but you actually play it five times! The count is 1e+ a2e +a3 e+a 4e+, with the final C being an eighth note. (I’ve separated the groups to show the 3-note pattern, but of course the count is continuous)

Thanks Jesse for the comment… I always love when people pick apart these lessons to a degree of detail that even I sometimes miss… In response to your comment, there is a section of the video when i give an example of the lick and I do play it 5 times in a row. However when you listen to the full lick being played, It’s only repeated 4 times.
If it were to be played 5 times, then we would want to count it as 16th notes to fit into 1 bar of music. However because the actual lick has it repeating 4 times, and because the emphasize/accent is always put on the first note of the group of 3, I find it much better for people to understand if I explain and teach it as triplets.
Hopefully that makes sense and doesn’t confuse those that are not as advanced in rhythm.
Thanks
Mike Deiure

If you are interested in getting everything correct you state you can start this on the 5th or 15th fret. It should be 5th or 17th fret.
July 18, 2017 @ 3:11 pm
Great catch Vince and Thank You for pointing that out. You are correct, it would be the 5th or 17th fret. I need to work on my math :)

I just signed up and this backing track, Blues in A, was right on the money. I thoroughly enjoyed playing along with it, because I was making music. I am going to love this course. Thanks a million.
October 17, 2015 @ 2:22 pm
Awesome Darryl! Thanks for the message and glad you enjoyed the Blues lesson. What you said about making music is a HUGE point. What’s great about learning to jam to the blues is that it doesn’t take much to be able to play along to the progressions and start writing and creating your own ideas.
Keep jamming away and let us know if you have any questions

Hi I was so pleased to see a skilled player who recognises the quality of the cheaper guitar models like Epiphone from Gibson, and in this case a Squier Strat instead of the grossly expensive Fender Strat – it sounded pretty good to me – are you pleased with it?
August 7, 2015 @ 1:26 pm
Hey Peter,
Thanks for the comment! I do love this guitar… It’s actually a mid 80’s Japanese Strat, which are kind of hard to find. I also own an American Strat but I like playing this one better. The main things I love about is the neck and fret wire. The neck is super comfy and the fret wire is small so it’s easier to play fast on. It only has 21 frets and I do prefer 22 on a start, but it’s not a big deal.
I changed all the pickups to have a hot rails in the neck and bridge position and a lace sensor silver pickup in the middle. I’ll probably eventually change out the middle pickup to be more in line with the tone of the hot rails, but it does produce a nice clean tone while the hot rails allows the strat to play good for harder rock with more distortion

on the first example of this lick the 6th fret G string note is not in the A pentatonic minor scale or the blue note. It is a note in the second position of the Major Pentatonic. This confuses me.
July 30, 2015 @ 8:15 pm
Hey David,
Thanks for your comment and definitely a great catch/question. You are correct, the note you are referring to is not part of either the A pentatonic minor scale or the blues scale. It is one of those notes that is not in the key signature but just sounds good as a passing/connecting note that has a blues vibe to it.
Hope that helps

What pedals do you use on this lesson?
July 21, 2015 @ 2:57 pm
Thanks for the question O.V. I’m actually not using any pedals. Just some light overdrive from the amp which was custom built by a guy named John Nau

I’m a new member who just took my first lesson with Mike (Essential Blues Rippin). Although I consider(ed) myself an intermediate player, I learned a lot from this lesson. If all lessons are this well presented (which I’m sure they will be) I will certainly improve rapidly if I put in the time with them. Mike not only demonstrates the lesson, broken down into very learnable parts, in real-time and in slow-motion, but includes on-screen tab for an even clearer explanation. I really like the way Mike describes each lick in detail, not only demonstrating which notes to play, but also clearly explaining the timing, hand and finger positions and any articulations (vibrato, pull-offs etc.). You not only learn the lick but expand your overall technique which makes future lessons easier to learn. This lesson alone shows the importance of knowing where you are going with a lick or phrase, as proper hand and finger placement while playing each part can make any lick a lot easier to play. Thanks Mike, I’m looking forward to improving my playing skills with your helpful lessons. P.S. I have evaluated and or purchased several other on-line/DVD courses and can honestly say that Mike is as good as it gets for clearly articulating his instructions to the student. Your’re never left wondering (What?). Great lesson!
